Accessing a USB drive in XenServer

Since your XenServer machine is Linux-based, there are some challenges in getting/putting data from/to a removable USB device. The lab I work in is isolated from our corporate network, so I've come up with four handy solutions that I'd like to share here over the coming weeks:
Accessing an NTFS USB drive in XenServer
Formatting a USB drive exclusively for XenServer
Accessing CIFS shares in XenServer
OpenFiler virtual machine, and getting data inside it for sharing

First off: Once you've plugged a USB drive into you XenServer machine, how do you access the data therein? The first thing to do is logon to the Control Domain, usually through XenCenter, and type the command:
fdisk -l
Notice that the fdisk command shows the disks that XenServer knows about. I've highlighted here (in red) an NTFS USB drive that I've plugged into the XenServer. Notice also that the device name is /dev/sdc, and that the first partition on that device has itself a device name of /dev/sdc1. In this example, the local disk on which I've installed XenServer is /dev/sda, which has three partitions (shown first in the listing).
Accessing an NTFS USB drive in XenServer
Here I've plugged in an NTFS USB drive, and I've established that XenServer (Linux) knows the first partition by the name/dev/sdc1. Since this is a disk device, we need to "mount" it into the Linux filesystem. In this way, it will become a part of the filesystem hierarchy. The only thing I need is an empty directory to mount "over". Most Linux distributions come with an empty /mnt directory for just this purpose:

mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt

Note that the target directory of your mount has to exist, and any files that existed in that directory will be "hidden" until you un-mount the device (see later for un-mounting). There's nothing special about the directory you mount over - it's a regular directory. What I usually end up doing is creating another directory inside of /mnt to mount my disk over. That way I can have many "mount points" if I want to transfer data between them.

The big drawback with mounting an NTFS drive is that it's supported in read-only mode only. This isn't usually a problem with software like NTFS-3G being available, but Citrix doesn't support the installation of any software inside of the XenServer Control Domain.

But at least now I can use regular Linux commands to copy data from the drive, for example you could import an already backed-up VM straight from the drive, using something like:

xe vm-import filename='/mnt/backups/Windows XP.xva'

This assumes that there was an existing folder in the root of the mounted partition called backups.

Before unplugging the USB drive, you'll need to "un-mount" the drive, making sure that your current working directory is not somewhere down the /mnt path (or wherever you've mounted the device):

cd /umount /mnt
Now you can safely unplug the USB drive from the XenServer machine.

Autoplay killed in windows update

User of windows XP and Vista will no longer see custom entries in autorun dialog boxes for USB flash drive. To help prevent the spread of malware through rougue 'autorun..inf' files, a recent windows update disables them from being executed. User will be able to open the drivers with Windows Explorer and run executables manually. CD's and DVDs will not be affected.

Bypass Surgery an INFO which may find helpful

Dear All, This is a new theory which has come to my knowledge very recently and I thought that I should also share with you all. A few days back my Friends Father in law was admitted in a nursing home due to severe chest pain. He had an attack in 1997 and was undergoing normal treatment. Due to the sudden pain just 15 days back we once again got him admitted in a private nursing home at Kandivali, Mumbai. The doctors later suggested for Angiography. We conducted the Angiography at Hinduja Hospital and knew from the reports that he has multiple blockages. The doctor told that he cannot undergo Angioplasty due to several blockages but suggested 'By Pass Surgery'. The same day evening we bought him home since the doctor suggested that his heart is very weak and we can perform the by-pass only after 15 - 20 days. In the mean time we were discussing this issue with our relatives and friends, we got this new information from one of our family friends. There is a new therapy in the market which is known as - Chelation Therapy. Or Calation Therapy. According to this therapy any patient who has to undergo by-pass need not undergo the same. The patient is given appx. 18 bottles of blood where in some medicines are injected along with it. The blood cleans the system and removes all the blockages from the heart. The no. of bottles may increase depending upon the age factor and health of the patient. The cost of the blood per bottle would be appx. Rs.2,500/- The treatment takes of appx. 1 month. There are only 4 doctors in India and one of them is Dr.Dhananjay Shah at Malad (Mumbai) another at Karnataka. He has a list of patients who had to undergo by-pass from Lilavati, Hinduja and other major hospitals but after undergoing the above treatment they are absolutely fine and leading a normal life. I give below the Doctor's details for your info: Dr. Dhananjay Shah. Hospital Tel: 0091-22-2889 2089. Mob: 98194 39657. Email: shahdhananjay@ rediffmail. com

Track ur lost mobile phone

Got an interesting fact to share.. Nowdays each one of us carry Hi Fi Mobile devices and always fear that it may be stolen. Each mobile carries a unique IMEI i.e International Mobile Identity No which can be used to track your mobile anywhere in the world.

This is how it works!!!!!!

1Dial *#06# from ur mobile.

2Your mobile shows a unique 15 digit no (its a mix match ofalpha numeric digit code)

3Note down this number anywhere but except your mobile asthis is the number which will help trace your mobile incase of a theft.

4Once stolen you just have to mail this 15 digit IMEI no to cop@vsnl.net

5No need to go to police.

6Your Mobile will be traced withing next 24 hrs via a complexsystem of GPRS and internet.

7You will find where your hand set is being operatedeven in case your no is being changed.

PLEASE PASS ON THIS VERY IMP MESSAGE TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS AND RELATIVES.

Number game

Try this.....

http://www.regiftable.com/regiftingrobinpopup.html

Now how this works....

If you subtract the digits of any two digit number from itself, it would always be a multiple of 9. Ex: 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81,90, …..
Now, when you play this, if you would notice… the gift item mentioned for all these multiple of 9 at one instance are same item.

So, whatever number you think of.. the answer would always be a multiple of 9 and the item you find would be same as the one you think…

How many of us knew this....:)

7% This is something we should all read at least once a week!

7%.....

This is something we should all read at least once a week!

Written By Regina Brett , 90 years old, of The Plain Dealer, Cleveland , Ohio " To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me. It is the most-requested column I've ever written." My odometer rolled over to 90 in August, so here is the column once more:
1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.
2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.
3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.
4. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and parents will. Stay in touch.
5. Pay off your credit cards every month.
6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.
7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone. 8. It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it.
9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck.
10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.
11. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.
12. It's OK to let your children see you cry.
13. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it.
15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; God never blinks.
16. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind & soothes the soul
17. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.
18. Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.
19. It's never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else. 20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer.
21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special.
22. Over prepare, then go with the flow.
23. Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple.
24. The most important sex organ is the brain.
25. No one is in charge of your happiness but you.
26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words 'In five years, will this matter?'
27. Always choose life.
28. Forgive everyone everything.
29. What other people think of you is none of your business.
30. Time heals almost everything. Give time time.
31 . However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
32. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
33. Believe in miracles.
34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn't do.
35. Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.
36. Growing old beats the alternative - dying young.
37. Your children get only one childhood.

One Paragraph that explains Life ...

ONE PARAGRAPH THAT EXPLAINS LIFE! Arthur Ashe, the legendary Wimbledon player was dying of AIDS which he got due to infected blood he received during a heart surgery in 1983. From world over, he received letters from his fans, one of which conveyed: "Why does GOD have to select you for such a bad disease"? To this Arthur Ashe replied: " The world over -- 50 million children start playing tennis, 5 million learn to play tennis, 500,000 learn professional tennis, 50,000 come to the circuit, 5000 reach the grand slam, 50 reach Wimbledon, 4 to semi final, 2 to the finals,
When I was holding a cup I never asked GOD 'Why me?'.
And today in pain I should not be asking GOD 'Why me?' "Happiness keeps you Sweet,
Trials keep you Strong,Sorrow keeps you Human,Failure keeps you humble
and Success keeps you glowing,
but only Faith & Attitude Keeps you going...
